Privacy Policy

Your privacy is our priority. We built File Share with privacy at its core.

Last Updated: December 21, 2025

Privacy Summary

We never see your files - All transfers are direct peer-to-peer
We don't store your files - No server uploads or cloud storage
We don't collect personal data - No accounts, no tracking
End-to-end encrypted - WebRTC handles encryption automatically

1. How File Share Works

File Share is a browser-based peer-to-peer (P2P) file transfer application. When you share files using File Share, the files transfer directly from one device to another using WebRTC technology. Our servers only facilitate the initial connection between devices (called "signaling") but never handle your actual file data.

2. Data We DO NOT Collect

We want to be crystal clear about what we don't do:

  • Your Files: We never receive, store, or have access to files you transfer
  • File Contents: We cannot see what you're sharing
  • File Names: File metadata stays between your devices
  • Personal Information: No accounts, no emails, no names required
  • Location Data: We don't track your physical location
  • Browsing History: We don't monitor what you do on other websites

3. Minimal Technical Data We Collect

To provide the service, we collect minimal technical information necessary for devices to connect:

  • Peer IDs: Temporary random identifiers generated by PeerJS to facilitate connections (deleted when you close the page)
  • Connection Metadata: Basic signaling data to establish P2P connections (not stored permanently)
  • Anonymous Analytics: Basic website usage statistics (page views, browser types) to improve the service - no personally identifiable information

All of this data is temporary and deleted when you close your browser or disconnect.

4. How Your Files Are Protected

Your file transfers are protected through multiple layers:

  • Peer-to-Peer Transfer: Files go directly from sender to receiver, never through our servers
  • WebRTC Encryption: All data channels use DTLS (Datagram Transport Layer Security) and SRTP (Secure Real-time Transport Protocol)
  • No Permanent Storage: Files are never written to disk on our infrastructure
  • Ephemeral Connections: Connections are temporary and destroyed when you're done

5. Cookies and Local Storage

File Share uses minimal browser storage:

  • Service Worker Cache: For offline functionality and faster loading (optional PWA feature)
  • Local Preferences: Settings like dark mode or language preferences (stored locally only)
  • No Tracking Cookies: We don't use advertising or tracking cookies

6. Third-Party Services

File Share uses these third-party services:

  • PeerJS Cloud Server: For WebRTC signaling only (facilitates device connections but doesn't see file data)
  • Font Providers: Google Fonts for typography (may have their own privacy policies)

7. Your Rights and Control

You have complete control over your data:

  • Close the browser tab to immediately end all connections
  • Clear browser cache to remove any locally stored preferences
  • Use browser private/incognito mode for no local data storage
  • No account deletion needed (we don't have accounts)

8. Security

We take security seriously even though we don't handle your files:

  • HTTPS encryption for the website itself
  • WebRTC's built-in encryption for file transfers
  • No server-side file storage to compromise
  • Regular security updates and monitoring

9. Children's Privacy

File Share does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children under 13. The service is designed to be used without providing any personal information.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new privacy policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date.

The Bottom Line

File Share is built on the principle of privacy by design. We architected the system so that your files never touch our servers. We literally cannot see your files, even if we wanted to. Your data stays between your devices, encrypted and secure.
